Students show off fashions

Textiles and clothing students will get a chance to strut their stuff on the runway this weekend.

The 18th annual textiles and clothing Fashion Show will be in Fisher Theater at 7 p.m. today and Saturday. This year’s student-run show has the theme “Techno 2000.”

The show has been modified slightly this year. One of the biggest changes is the move from MacKay Hall to Fisher Theater.

“There are some constraints in MacKay that were keeping the show smaller than it wanted to be,” said J.R. Campbell, assistant professor of textiles and clothing. “The actual lighting and visual setup will be greatly improved. It should be pretty amazing.”

Jean Parsons, assistant professor in textiles and clothing, said other changes to the show are a benefit luncheon where selected garments from the show will be modeled and a gallery exhibit of portfolios and wearable designs.

ISU textiles and clothing alumni will be the guests of honor at the luncheon. Angie O’Riley and Michelle Blocksome Hornback will share their career experiences with the luncheon attendees.

O’Riley is a 1988 graduate and fashion stylist for Rosie O’Donnell, a fashion model and a technology specialist. Hornback, a 1995 graduate, is an engineer for Johnson Controls Inc. in Kentucky.

In past years, the show has included clothes that were brought in from various stores. However, Parsons said that won’t be the case this year.

“This year, it’s all student-created work,” she said.

One thing that hasn’t changed is the show being completely student-run, from the producers and designers to technical staff.

“They create the set design. They do the choreography. They decide on music. They decide how the pieces are going to be presented on the runway,” Parsons said. “They’re enthusiastic, and they have worked very hard and put in a lot of time.”

Campbell said the theme “Techno 2000” was picked for the show because it is the year of “Advancing Technology” at Iowa State.

“We wanted to show the connection between textiles and clothing and technology,” he said.

Awards to be presented Saturday include “Best” and “Runner-up” in categories such as evening wear, casual wear, accessories and portfolio. Tickets to the fashion show are $6 for tonight’s opening night show and $10 for the awards show Saturday.
