GSB to hold special meeting to finish 1999-2000 legislation

A special session of the Government of the Student Body senate has been called since last week’s eight-hour meeting was not enough time to wrap up business for the year.

Senators still have 10 bills and resolutions on the floor that need to be discussed and voted on before Tuesday night’s inauguration.

Most of the legislation is bylaw-related and requires two-thirds of senate approval to pass. Five chapters of the GSB bylaws are facing changes if the bills pass.

In addition, senators will vote to ratify the GSB contract with the Student Union Board for Student Office Space in the Memorial Union. GSB President Matt Craft signed the contract in March, and it must be ratified by the senate to take effect for the 2000-2001 academic year.

The senate also must approve a bill that proposes the allocation of next year’s GSB student activity fees.

According to the bill, GSB will receive nearly $1.5 million from student fees revenue, which must be divided among the Graduate Student Senate, the Senate Discretionary Fund, Fall Specials and other funds outlined in the bylaws. After that money is subtracted from the total, GSB will have more than $1.3 million to allocate to student organizations.

In recognition of the successful winter sports season for the ISU men’s and women’s basketball teams, the gymnastics team and the wrestling team, GSB has proposed a resolution to express pride and appreciation of the teams’ efforts.

GSB will meet Monday night at 9 in the Gallery of the Memorial Union. The following will be discussed:

* A bill to ratify the GSB-SUB contract for Student Office Space in the Memorial Union. By Olson and Wisher.

* A bill to change Chapter 4 of the GSB bylaws to redefine the senate rules of order for efficiency and consistency. By Wisher, Olson and others.

* A bill to adopt forms for senate bills, orders and amendments pending senate approval of the amendments to Chapter 4 of the bylaws. By Olson and Wisher.
