Run-off for IRHA execs to be held today

Since no candidate received a majority of the vote, a run-off election for the two top slates in the Inter-Residence Hall Association presidential race will be held today.

IRHA President David Sims said the IRHA Election Committee thought the second election would be needed since three slates would create a larger split in the votes. Sims called for the run-off election between the top two slates from Tuesday’s election.

“That is the general trend when there isn’t a majority,” he said.

The breakdown of the votes for the Tuesday elections are as follows:

* Lucas Howell, junior in political science, and Aaron Schmidt, senior in computer engineering — 43.4 percent.

* Tom Plagge, junior in computer engineering, and Chris Benson, junior in animal science — 29.2 percent.

* Jeff Greiner, sophomore in history, and Paul Duncan, sophomore in transportation and logistics — 23.2 percent.

Because of their percentage, Greiner and Duncan will not be in the run-off election. Sims said the slate was edged out of the race by a mere 54 votes.

“This is the closest race that IRHA has seen in a long time,” he said.

A total of 922 students voted in Tuesday’s elections.

Candidates had expected Richardson Court Association to have the most voters since each slate has residents from that association.

RCA met that expectation, tallying 538 votes. Towers Residence Association turned out 213 voters, and Union Drive Association had 171.

Benson said he is looking forward to the election.

“I’m, of course, excited,” he said. “I’m pretty confident that we can [win]; we just need to get our people out [voting].”

Schmidt said people who voted on Tuesday need to vote again and get other people to come to the polls.

“Encourage your friends to vote. We’d like to see a good turnout,” Schmidt said. “That’s what we’ve been all about for this election.”

The winning slate will be announced at tonight’s IRHA meeting at 8 in the Large Conference Room of the Maple-Willow-Larch Commons.
