Tennis closes regular season on high note

The ISU women’s tennis team wrapped up the regular season in sparkling fashion over the weekend.

The Cyclones rolled to a 8-1 win over Missouri last Friday at the Forker Courts to finish the season with a 7-13 record.

The victory was the first Big 12 win of the season for the Cyclones.

“It feels great. We were so fired up, we all wanted to win it really bad. I’m really glad it came out the way it did,” Cyclone freshman Courtney Leese said.

Leese teamed with Edna Vazquez to post an 8-5 win over Julie Thomas and Andrea Friedman at No. 3 doubles. The duo finishes with a 21-6 record with the 21 wins breaking the school record.

“I think we have fairly similar game styles. Our games complement each other and we both love to play doubles. We work well together,” Courtney Leese said.

Vazquez echoes Leese’s thoughts on their success.

“I guess I’d say we both have a good doubles instinct. We communicate very well on the court and that’s important in doubles,” Vazquez said.

The Cyclones took five of the six singles matches and won three in straight sets.

Winning in straight sets were Kendra Leese, Karin Westberg and Tara Goedjen.

Kendra Leese, the lone Cyclone senior, played in her last home meet and went out with a hard-fought 7-5, 7-6 victory over Caitlin Thompson at No. 3 singles.

“This couldn’t be any better. We all fought hard and this was a total team effort. Coming out and beating Missouri 8-1 is really tough,” Kendra Leese said.

Vazquez pulled out a 5-7, 7-6, 6-4 win at No. 2 singles in a match that lasted nearly four hours. Kristin Gyaki also won in three sets, 0-6, 6-1, 7-5 at No. 4 singles.

“I ended up really tired in my singles match. I lost the first set but I didn’t let that keep me from winning the next two sets. I knew I could win the match so I just went out and did my job,” Vazquez said.

In doubles, Westberg and Noortje Cornelissen picked up their 14th win with a 8-3 victory. Kendra Leese and Gyaki won 9-8 in the other doubles match.

The Cyclones are back in action at the Big 12 Championships starting Thursday and going through the weekend in Kansas City.

“We’ve been playing well all season, but we haven’t got it together where all of us were on the same page on the same day. We did that against Missouri and hopefully we can keep it up at the Big 12 meet,” Courtney Leese said.
