IRHA parliament reads three new bills at meeting

With three bills up for their first read, food-service plans, materials on residence hall doors and computer equipment were discussed at Thursday’s Inter-Residence Hall Association.

One bill concerned financing for an IBM Wordpad, which will be voted on at this week’s meeting.

According to the bill, the computer will allow the IRHA secretary to put the minutes together more efficiently. IRHA Secretary Seana Brandenburg urged IRHA parliament to pass the bill.

“Usually, it takes about one and one half-hour [to type the notes], but sometimes I’ve spent five to six,” Brandenburg said. “It’s just going through [the notes], repeating everything over and over.”

Department of Residence officials also asked IRHA to draw up a policy on what could be posted on doors in residence halls. The bill states that if the information on the door violates a person’s right to privacy or is defamatory, the resident would have to remove the materials or the resident would be removed from the residence halls.

Officials from ISU Dining Services want IRHA to support a new program it’s launching this fall called “Dining Dollars.”

According to the bill, Dining Dollars will allow students to put money on their ISU Cards to purchase meals at the dining halls and items from the residence hall convenience stores. If students run out of money, they can add Dining Dollars to their cards at a 4 to 10 percent discount.

IRHA Vice President Jeff Greiner briefed the parliament on what the program would entail.

“The idea is you will be given a complementary $50, and you can use it to pay for guests [to eat in the dining centers],” Greiner said.
