IRHA to vote on money for RCA block party, dorm leader conference

The Multicultural Awareness and Support System (MASS) may be getting some extra help with its entertainment for a Richardson Court Association block party it’s sponsoring April 8.

Inter-Residence Hall Association members will be voting at tonight’s meeting to decide if they should approve the allocation of money toward the event.

The bill proposes to give $800 to the group from the IRHA discretionary fund. Although the party is going to be held in RCA, all ISU residents are encouraged to attend.

Last week, RCA President Nathan Ohrt said MASS intended to make some changes to the amount of money needed.

Ohrt said IRHA will be able to base its vote on the revised budget information.

“MASS is still working on some of the costs, and this will change and be finalized [by tonight],” Ohrt said.

Also, two bills will be up for their first read at tonight’s meeting. One bill will ask members to review this year’s ballot for the IRHA presidential and vice-presidential elections.

IRHA President Dave Sims said that according to IRHA’s bylaws, parliament must see the ballot before the elections.

“It asks [parliament] to approve this year’s election ballot,” Sims said. “It doesn’t require a second read.”

The other new bill proposes that more money be given so that more student leaders can attend the National Association of College and University Residence Halls (NACURH).

Jeff Greiner, IRHA vice president, and Amy Sywassink, director of conferences, are the co-authors of the bill.

“They need more money to take more people to NACURH, and I think it’ll go by without a hitch,” Greiner said.

NACURH is a national conference open to all students living in residence halls to share ideas and concerns. A total of 15 students will be attending the conference at the University of Colorado at Boulder on May 25-28. The traveling arrangements will be paid in full by IRHA.

Tonight’s meeting will be held in the Large Conference Room in the Maple-Willow-Larch Commons at 7.
