IRHA may pass CyRide discounts

The Inter-Residence Hall Association parliament will be discussing bills concerning the room and board increase and discounts for CyRide bus passes at tonight’s meeting.

Every year, the room and board rate has increased because of inflation rates and costs of the ISU Department of Residence’s Master Plan, according to the proposed bill. The new rate is projected to raise the prices of undergraduate room and board rates by at least $207, according to estimates from the department.

There is little controversy about the projected increase among parliament members; IRHA’s bill approves and accepts the increase.

IRHA Vice President Jeff Greiner said “everything looks fair” concerning the pricing, and the bill will probably pass.

Katie Rau, director of Academic Affairs for IRHA, also said the bill was not a surprise.

“I don’t find a problem [with the bill],” Rau said. “It wasn’t anything unexpected.”

The parliament also will discuss CyRide prices, a subject that is more controversial to some members of IRHA.

The bill proposes to discount CyRide season passes for students who live in the dorms. If the bill passes, the rates will be subsidized by a $55,000 payment to CyRide by the Department of Residence.

Erin Link, Union Drive Association president, said she isn’t in favor of the bill.

“I don’t like the bill,” Link said. “It doesn’t help my residents very well. I think the $55,000 can be used in a better way.”

Nathan Ohrt, Richardson Court Association president, agreed that the money could be put to better use.

“I’m not sure it’s the best answer for the students. I think that there are better ways to solve the problem,” Ohrt said.

Greiner said the Towers Residence Association recently passed a bill about CyRide. The bill proposes that every TRA resident pay $35 for the year to fund the Brown Route, which runs from TRA to the ISU campus.

“[That legislation] has kind of overshadowed what we’re doing,” Greiner said.

The IRHA meeting will be held at 7 tonight in the Chessman Lounge, located in Helser Hall.
