Calling all clubbers

Two weeks ago, the Maintenance Shop hosted Techno Injection to the delight of clubbers and ravers across the area. But anyone who just didn’t get enough dancing that night, don’t worry. Dom’n8tricks is quite confident they can provide everything you need and more.

Dom’n8tricks is a Des Moines area group made up of DJ/percussionist DiscoTony and award winning dancer Miss Vyvyan. They often incorporate the talents of guest musicians in order to mix things up and appeal to different tastes.

“Every show is different because we have different people playing with us,” said DiscoTony.

The group is definitely planning on stirring things up for its Ames show, hinting that they will probably be at least two more vocalists, another dancer and even bass and guitar players, not to mention plenty of surprises as well.

Friday’s show marks the first time the group has played in Ames. An opportunity to play at the highly reputable M-Shop is something that Dom’n8tricks isn’t taking lightly. DiscoTony is also anticipating the chance to give Ames the real dance club atmosphere that many people think it lacks.

“I was out last weekend [in Ames] for a couple nights, and there was one place I went to that was ok, but they played all top 40 stuff. If you want to get the same vibe from a club in New York or Chicago, this is what you want to see and where you want to be that night,” DiscoTony said of the upcoming show.

DiscoTony is no stranger to music. Since he was a small child, he has been influenced by his music-passionate grandparents. When he was young, his grandfather would take his record player to the relatives’ house so the family could dance together.

The burning passion to provide people with the gift of music and dance, just like his grandfather did, is the driving force behind Dom’n8tricks.

“No question, dance music makes the world go ’round,” DiscoTony said sincerely. “From disco, to house, to rap, to funk, to techno and beyond, people everywhere love to move on the floor, sweat and get lost in the rhythm.”

While DiscoTony provides the beats, his partner in body grooving, Miss Vyvyan, provides the optic entertainment.

“My role is to turn people on to the music. I see it as a visual thing,” Miss Vyvyan explained. “They don’t necessarily have to get up and dance, but I want them visually stimulated by what they see.”

One of the ways Vyvyan accomplishes this is by constant changes into new and bizarre outfits that are sure to catch the audience’s attention.

DiscoTony described Miss Vyvyan as a dancing chameleon that one minute can be nice and pretty, and the next, decked down and dirty.

Influenced by acts such as Michael Jackson, Madonna, and even Juice Newton, Vyvyan has spent a great deal of her life dancing.

“As long as I can remember, I was dancing before I was walking. I have always had my dancing to fall back on when I wanted,” Miss Vyvyan said.

“She’s a club diva. We’ll play a four-hour set and she won’t stop. She has incredible stamina,” DiscoTony said of his musical companion.

DiscoTony’s unheard of combinations of techno, classic disco and Chicago style house music has been a hit with audiences throughout the Midwest. And the group’s expectations for its debut in Ames are plenty high.

DiscoTony encourages fans to wear their most outrageous club gear and be ready for a show full of unpredictability that everyone from hippies to hip-hoppers will like.

“Calling all clubbers, ravers, dancers, you can just totally let out, we don’t stop, we don’t take breaks,” DiscoTony said. “We’re gong to put on a hell of a show.”
