Top-ranked wrestlers start strong with win over Minnesota State

MANKATO, Minn.— The Iowa State wrestling team made its season debut as the top-ranked team in the country and put together a strong showing.

The Cyclones rolled to a 32-6 victory over Minnesota State in the Otto Arena in Mankato Friday. The Mavericks are the seventh rated team in Division II.

The Cyclones dominated the meet, winning eight of 10 matches including a pin, a technical fall and three major decisions over the Mavericks.

Cody Sanderson picked up the lone Cyclone fall by pinning Josh Hanson in the first period at 133 pounds, and brother Cael was just as impressive.

Cael Sanderson, defending national champion at 184 pounds, won a battle of highly ranked wrestlers at 184 pounds.

Sanderson cruised to a 26-11 technical fall over Ryan Rettke.

Sanderson is ranked No. 1, while Rettke is No. 2 in Division II.

Recording the three major decisions for the Cyclones were heavyweight Trent Hynek, Sonny Marchette at 141 pounds and Zach Thompson at 197.

The meet started with the 197-pound match by way of the draw, and Thompson got things off to a good start.

Thompson, ranked third at 197, posted a 15-7 victory over Travis Farniok.

Hynek followed with a 9-0 victory over Travis Wiuff, but the Mavericks countered with a win from 125-pounder Adam Kramer. Kramer handed Matt Azevedo a 11-6 defeat to cut the Cyclone lead to 8-3.

The Cyclones then took control with five straight victories started off with Cody Sanderson’s pin. In the next three matches, the Cyclones got wins from newcomers.

Marchette defeated Chris Murphy 18-7 in the 141-pound match, and Billy Maldonado won by an 11-5 score at 149.

Todd Buckland followed with an upset at 157 as he defeated top-ranked Matt Petsinger 13-8.

Buckland was competing in the Cyclone lineup for returning NCAA qualifier Cole Sanderson, who had injured his knee in practice.

Returning All-American Joe Heskett kept the Cyclones’ run going with a 8-1 win over Matt Gadient at 165 to move the lead to 27-3.

The 174-pound match proved to be the closest of the meet as Maverick Billy Dehmer pulled out a 3-2 decision over Chad Ziesman. Ziesman was in action due to a knee injury suffered by Scott Duffy.

Cael Sanderson finished off the meet with his dominating win at 184 pounds.

The Cyclones were in action Sunday at the Harold Nichols Open in Fort Dodge.

The ‘Clones are slated to compete again next Saturday at the Omaha Open.

The next dual action for the Cyclones is Nov. 28, when they will host Wisconsin, which is ranked 20th.
