Iowa State ran out of time in its 31-24 loss to Texas Tech at Jack Trice Stadium on Sept. 26, 1998 in the Big 12 conference opener for both schools.

The Cyclones fell victim to a surprising aerial assault by the Red Raiders in falling behind 31-10 before ISU’s quarterback-receiver combo of Todd Bandhauer and Damien Groce ignited a furious rally.

Operating in a hurry up offense, Bandhauer hit Groce with fourth quarter touchdown passes of 20 and five yards, the last coming with 2:15 remaining in the game.

However, Texas Tech managed to hold off the Cyclones in the final minutes to secure the victory.

“Maybe we should have started the game with our two-minute offense,” ISU head coach Dan McCarney said of ISU’s excellent offensive execution late in the game.

Bandhauer completed 19 of 37 passes for 230 yards and three touchdowns on the afternoon, while Groce hauled in 10 of Bandy’s passes, including all three touchdowns, for 116 yards. Though Iowa State gave the Red Raiders a run for their money, Bandhauer said Texas Tech came through when they needed to for the win.

“We made some big plays but Texas Tech made more,” he said.

The Red Raiders featured the nation’s top rusher in Ricky Williams, but it was receiver Donnie Hart who did in the Cyclones.

Hart caught five passes for 163 yards, including a 68-yard touchdown grab to end the first half.

Williams and Cyclone running back Darren Davis entered the game averaging nearly 400 yards rushing combined, but were held to 105 and 86 yards respectively. Williams said it was ISU’s huge effort to contain him that opened it up for Hart and Texas Tech quarterbacks Matt Title and Rob Peters.

“Iowa State keyed on the run, and our coach [Spike Dykes] changed things,” Williams said. “He opened up the other plays.”

The loss ended a two game winning streak for the Cyclones and evened up their overall record at 2-2 on their way to a 3-8 campaign.
