Men place last at Big Four

The men’s golf team is recovering from a disappointing fourth-place finish at this week’s Big Four tournament in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

After consistently beating Iowa, Northern Iowa and Drake all season, the Cyclones failed to defeat any one of them over the weekend.

Coach Jay Horton did not have much to say about the play but pointed out the fact that his team is still young and is continuing to learn.

“Youth tends to compound into mistakes,” Horton said. “They’re constantly learning from those mistakes.”

UNI’s Mike Lewis took the medalist honors by shooting a two round total of 147. Phil Slovitt lead the Cyclone men and finished in a tie for third. This should be a emotional boost for him entering the final stages of the fall.

Cyclone Joe Christianson also played well, finishing in a tie for seventh.

Hopefully, the team can rebound and play well in what should be a very competitive Missouri Invitational.

Horton plans on bringing a more experienced team to the upcoming tournament. The team will be led by junior Aaron Patton, Slovitt and a trio of redshirt freshmen, including Matt Gatchel, Kevin Oswald and Christianson.

“This team here is the strongest team I can put out there,” Horton said.

There will be a lot of strong teams at Missouri next week, including Kansas, Wichita State, Colorado and Arkansas State. The Cyclones will be face several of these teams again.

“Hopefully, we’ll have a good finish and get ourselves ready for the spring,” Horton said.
