Town meeting to focus on Resource Plant

City of Ames officials will be holding a meeting regarding the Resource Recovery Plant tonight.

The meeting will be held at Ames City Hall, 515 Clark Ave.

Clare Bills, the city’s public relations officer, said the city is required to hold these meetings every three years.

The meetings are required by the Department of Natural Resources, said Kenny Moravetz, superintendent of the plant.

“When we are given a permit, we have a customary plan which includes a public meeting every three years,” said Paul Wiegand, director of the Public Works Department.

The customary plan states the goals of the plant, along with rules and guidelines, he said.

Bills said directors of the Resource Recovery Plant already have reviewed the plan to see if any changes need to be made.

Despite the meeting, Wiegand said no changes are anticipated.

“We plan to do everything the same, but the meeting is a chance for the public to give inputs and demands,” he said.

Wiegand said council members are concerned with public opinion.

“The plant wants to be an active part of the city,” he said.

Most of the meeting will be a question-and-answer session. During this time, people will be able to offer their suggestions and opinions, Wiegand said.

“We can address any problems, answer questions and discuss any misconceptions about the plant,” he said.

The Resource Recovery Plant takes garbage and compounds it into material that can be used for the power plant, Moravetz said.

Wiegand said the plant has been meeting the state’s requirements and goals of using at least 50 percent of the city’s garbage for energy for the power plant.

The meeting is open to everyone, Wiegand said.

“Whoever wants to be at the meeting can be there; we have no target audience,” he said.
