MTV says Goo Goo Dolls to headline Rock Veishea

Although KKDM radio station and an MTV Web site are reporting that the rock band Goo Goo Dolls will be playing at Hilton Coliseum Veishea weekend, spokesmen for the Veishea entertainment committee are maintaining that nothing is definite yet.

Veishea entertainment co-chairmen Matt Schaefer and Justin Wilhelm both said the committee does not have a contract with the band.

“Nothing is set in stone as of right now,” said Schaefer, junior in agricultural business. “We haven’t signed anybody.”

Wilhelm, junior in mechanical engineering, said the reports of the band playing at Hilton are just tentative.

Both the radio station and an online tour schedule for Goo Goo Dolls reported that the band The New Radicals will be the opening act for the Goo Goo Dolls.

“They’re a little premature on that,” he said.

Corey Moss, co-music coordinator for Rock Veishea, said it is common in the music industry for tentative plans to be reported but then fall through.

“Last year, [the band] Fastball would be a good example,” said Moss, senior in journalism and mass communication.

“We [the committee] were talking to Fastball; we were talking to Mighty Mighty Bosstones; we were talking to, like, 20 other groups,” he said.

Last year, Tonic, The Flaming Lips Experiment and 35″ Mudder played Rock Veishea.

“We can’t make a promise when we have a band that’s not legally bound,” Moss said.

Although Schaefer and Wilhelm said the committee still is considering other headliners for Rock Veishea, Schaefer said Goo Goo Dolls is “one of the top considerations, along with The New Radicals.”

Moss said the Goo Goo Dolls would be an appropriate band for Rock Veishea ’99’s audience.

“They have a wide appeal; they have two very unique approaches to rock,” he said.

“They have beautiful, radio-friendly ballads, and they can also be aggressive — they made Bush look like softies a few years ago when they opened for them,” Moss said.

Schaefer agreed that the committee wants a group who will garner approval from the Iowa State and Ames communities.

“We want someone who will appeal to a diverse audience,” he said.

Schaefer and Wilhelm also said they do not know if the ticket system will work the same way it did last year.

During Veishea ’98, only members of the “Cyclone Family” — Iowa State students, alumni and Ames residents — could purchase tickets and attend Rock Veishea.

The official line-up for Rock Veishea ’99 will be announced within the next two or three weeks.
