Chappelle to headline Veishea’s Dew the Rec

The Veishea Committee announced Tuesday that the headlining act for Dew the Rec is stand-up comedian Dave Chappelle.

Chappelle, who has appeared in such films as “The Nutty Professor” and “Half-Baked,” will be an excellent addition to Veishea’s entertainment line-up, according to Dew the Rec co-chairmen.

Joel Akers, Dew the Rec co-chairman, said Chappelle definitely will appeal to a college crowd.

“He’s a young guy, about 25 years old, and he’s an up-and-coming comedian,” said Akers, senior in agricultural studies.

He noted that Chappelle has been featured in HBO specials and is going to appear in the upcoming film “200 Cigarettes.”

Tom Duncan, Dew the Rec co-chairman, said Chappelle has appeared at other college festivals similar to Veishea.

Akers said Chappelle will relate to a college audience better that last year’s act.

The featured comedian at last year’s Dew the Rec was former “Saturday Night Live” cast member Kevin Nealon.

Akers said Chappelle may be more enticing to a college crowd because he performs more “original” material, as opposed to Nealon.

Duncan agreed, calling Chappelle a “pure stand-up comedian.” He said Chappelle’s routine is a mix of observational humor, among other genres.

“He doesn’t have one set comedic style,” said Duncan, sophomore in mechanical engineering.

Although some ISU students may not recognize Chappelle’s name at first, Akers said they’ll associate him with his performances in movies such as “The Nutty Professor.”

“We’re both really excited about his performance,” Duncan said.

The opening acts for Dew the Rec are the musical-comedy group The Cartwright Brothers and comedian Gregg Rogell.

Dew the Rec will be held Saturday, April 17 at 9 p.m., at the Lied Recreation Athletic Center.

Tickets are $5 for ISU students.

Tickets will go on sale from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Iowa State Center. As with ticket sales for Veishea Center Stage, only Iowa State students will be able to purchase tickets on Saturday.

The price is $10 general admission for ISU community members, and $10 for student guests.

ISU students can purchase only one extra guest ticket, and they cannot purchase tickets for other ISU students. Similar to Veishea Center Stage, ISU students are allowed to bring one guest to Dew the Rec. Guests with tickets must be escorted by an ISU student to enter the facility.

ISU community members, which include faculty, staff, ISU alumni and Ames residents, can purchase tickets starting Monday.
