Volleyball slide continues

The Cyclone volleyball team continued to struggle this weekend, falling in three games to conference opponents Texas A&M and Texas.

On Friday, against the Aggies, Iowa State fell 15-3, 15-3, 15-1. The Cyclones struggled to put together an offense and didn’t begin to slow down the potent A&M attack.

Led by Stacy Sykora’s 11 kills, the Aggies hit .409 from the floor, compared to the .044 average of the Cyclones.

The only bright spot for the Cyclones, who managed only two blocks on the night and committed 20 attacking errors, was the above-average hitting of freshman Lindsay Robinson and senior Virginia Hoss.

Both teams committed six service errors, but the Cyclones didn’t managed even a single ace, compared to the eight turned in by the Aggies.

On Saturday night, in Austin, the Cyclones didn’t fare any better, falling 15-4, 15-0, 15-7.

They held the Longhorns to a mediocre .274 hitting average but couldn’t muster any offensive firepower whatsoever, hitting a frightening -.095 from the floor.

For the first time this year, no one on the Cyclone roster managed an attack percentage over zero. Nanette Allen, the team’s best attacker on the night, managed five kills and a -.050 average.

Allen and Julie McGrath led a somewhat improved defense with five digs apiece, and the Cyclones, as a team, notched five blocks.

Jill Gremmel of the Longhorns was the thorn in the Cyclones’ side on Saturday, converting eight of nine attacks without an error (.889), in addition to assisting on eight more kills.

The losses drop the Cyclones to 3-22 overall and 1-12 in the Big 12 conference. They have two road and four home matches remaining, traveling to Missouri and Kansas State this weekend before returning home to end the season.

The Cyclones face Kansas and Oklahoma in two weeks at the Forker Building before wrapping up their season with rematches against Texas and Texas A&M in three weeks at Hilton.
