Ride on, Urban Cowboy

Chad Calek

Every movie I watch lately reminds me of my love for my woman.

For example, I watched the John Travolta classic “Urban Cowboy” the other night, and it hit me — wow, what a great flick.

But it’s more than just that. It’s a movie that deals with a lesson all men have learned or will learn sometime — love is more important than sex.

Travolta, a beer-drinking, mechanical bull-riding expert, meets his true love, Sissy, at the world famous Gilley’s Bar in Houston, Texas.

His macho attitude gets in the way when Sissy decides she wants to ride the mechanical bull. You see, Travolta is old school in the sense that he believes a mechanical bull is no place for a lady.

Soon, Travolta’s violent outbursts drive Sissy into the hands of another guy.

Travolta quickly finds refuge in a beer-drinking, futureless, bar whore.

Although she does everything he wants, Travolta’s heart still lies with Sissy.

So there our hero is — caught between the question of whether a good lay is worth more than true love.

The decision of whether or not to give up true love for a killer lay is a tough one. All the men out there know where I’m coming from.

I mean, a “true” whore is pretty hard to come by these days, right? I’m not talking about a girl who just likes to have sex. I’m talking about a girl who is on call for you on a daily basis, if you know what I mean.

She’ll do it in the back seat, at a concert or even in front of your friends.

These women are the women you want to get rid of, but you just can’t seem to bring yourself to cut the sexual ties.

But then again, true love only comes along once in a lifetime.

A woman who captivates your heart, mind and body with her heart, mind and body is a rare thing. It takes a lot to be in love, ya know?

And true love is not something you can work to achieve. You can’t make yourself fall in love. It just happens one day, and the next thing you know, you’re staring in the mirror asking yourself if you have really been this blessed.

When it comes to true love, there is no substitute.

To make a long story short, our tobacco-chewing cowboy realizes that he should take a pass on a woman whose aspirations are drinking beer and screwing.

Travolta once again rides the mechanical bull with his true love.

When I saw this, a tear dropped from my eye. I quickly began finalizing my wedding plans.

This movie is so important and so true to the male psyche. Although all men love the sex-crazed woman, it’s true love that we must achieve.

For those of you out there caught in the struggle between love and sex, I strongly suggest this movie. The truth, according to Travolta, shall set you free.

That’s right. Travolta showed me the way. Ride on, Urban Cowboy, ride on.

Have a good one today, and remember, whether you’re laughing at me or with me, I still provided you with a smile. So be polite and say “thank you.”

We’ll talk later.
