Cyclones trounced by UNI

The Cyclone volleyball team was fiercely outmatched in their first non-tournament competition of the 1998 season Tuesday night.

Iowa State lasted only 46 minutes against intrastate rival Northern Iowa, falling in three games (15-3, 15-1, 15-4).

The Cyclones hit a depressing -.171 from the floor, committing 21 attack errors and managing only nine kills.

The Panthers, on the other hand, couldn’t miss. Alexandra Auker led the Panthers and tied the entire ISU team with nine of UNI’s 27 kills.

Shishonee Weber contributed eight digs, and Shannon Perry added 21 assists to the effort.

The only bright spot on the Cyclone side of the net was freshman Melissa Duffield, who led the team in digs, with six, and tied for the lead in kills, with two. Duffield was the only Cyclone with a positive attack percentage on the night (.143).

Coach Kerry Miller and her team will have to recover quickly from the debacle as they continue their season with three matches this weekend at the Western Michigan Invitational tournament.
