A variety show with age

In a college town teaming with young people, senior citizens have to strive in order to avoid being lost in the shuffle.

Some senior citizens have made an art out of it.

“Song In Our Hearts: Celebration of Aging” is a variety show consisting of performers that are all 60 years or older. The performance will take place this weekend at the City Auditorium on 6th Street in downtown Ames.

Aimed towards building a community that supports the 60 and older age group, the show was formed four years ago by a group of senior citizens who love to perform.

Co-organizer Kathryn Andry said “Song in Our Hearts” isn’t like other variety shows because the performers will be dancing, singing, tapping and impersonating in an “actual polished performance.”

She also said the cast is entirely made up of volunteers, coming from many different towns in Story county.

This year, the show is focusing on great moments in entertainment by portraying old-time famous people such as Archie Bunker.

“We don’t expect a lot of the students to recognize a lot of the old names, but the quality of the performance will still be entertaining for them,” Andry said.

Many of those participating, such as director Keith Wirtz, are graduates of Iowa State or have extensive backgrounds in theater.

“All ages will thoroughly enjoy it,” Andry said. “It is a faced paced two hours.”

“Song In Our Hearts; Celebration of Aging” is sponsored by the Heartland Senior Services program. All proceeds from the $3 student tickets will support the program.

The curtain opens at 7:30 p.m. for Friday’s performance and at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday.
