The acting head of special collections for Iowa State’s Parks Library was arrested Friday at a Grundy Center motel and charged with third-degree sexual abuse.

Tyler Walters, a 34-year-old associate professor, was taken into custody by Grundy County sheriffs at about 11:30 a.m.

He was released Saturday after posting a $50,000 bond.

A press release from the sheriff’s office said the arrest was the result of a joint investigation by the Grundy Center, Cedar Falls and Ames Police Departments.

Ames Police Sgt. Randy Kessel said his office did not play a major role in the investigation.

“We helped them get a search warrant,” he said, adding that the team had searched at a location in Ames.

Brad Harris, assistant attorney for Grundy County, said the case remains under investigation.

Harris said a preliminary hearing is set for early next week.

At that time, he said, a decision will be made as to whether there is probable cause to continue pursuing the charges.

He would not release any further information about Walters’ situation.

Walters has not been at work for the last two days, said John McCarroll, director of University Relations.

“As of yesterday, Mr. Walters had talked to his supervisor (Olivia Madison, interim dean of the library) and said he was planning to take vacation time today and tomorrow,” he said.

By the end of the week, McCarroll said, Madison will discuss Walters’ immediate future with him.

Two possible options for Walters would be taking more vacation time or going on leave of absence, he said.

The university is not involved with the work of the police departments, McCarroll said.

“There is no university investigation underway,” he said. “It’s strictly been law enforcement agencies outside the university.”
