Veishea drunk bus: no alcohol required

Cy-Ride’s Moonlight Express isn’t going to be slowing down over Veishea weekend.

Speculation has been building across campus about whether the university’s commitment to a dry Veishea would halt “the drunk bus.”

Bob Bourne, director of Cy-Ride, said there are no reasons to shut down the service because of the dry-Veishea pledge.

“You don’t have to be drunk to ride the bus,” Bourne said.

The number of people using the Moonlight Express on a normal weekend already has gone up 20 to 25 percent this year, Bourne said. He said he is expecting the number of riders to increase substantially over Veishea.

“There’s going to be a lot of travel those nights,” Bourne said.

According to Jenny Bethurem, Cy-Ride operations assistant, Cy-Ride is prepared for the busy weekend.

She said Moonlight Express usually runs four door-to-door buses, which respond to phone calls requesting rides, and one fixed route to the dorms.

Bethurem said the number of door-to-door buses will increase to five, and instead of the one fixed route to the dorms, six routes will be running across Ames, with stops every 15 minutes.

“We’ll also have extra help in the office so, if needed, we can have someone take another bus out,” Bethurem said.

The Moonlight Express will be running 7 p.m. to 3 a.m., Friday and Saturday of Veishea. For further information on stops, or to request a ride, call Cy-Ride at 292-1100.
