Iowa State students looking to make a change in their career path might be able to find the right route at the 1998 Academic Expos.

“The Academic Expos are for all students who are questioning their choice of a major or are interested in picking up a minor,” said Amy Rutledge, interim programs coordinator for the Academic Success Center.

The next two Academic Expos will be held on Wednesday from 5 to 6:30 p.m. in the Wallace-Wilson Commons, and on April 1 from 5 to 6:30 p.m. in the West Friley Dining Center.

Off-campus students are welcome at the Wallace-Wilson Expo, according to Kurt Earnest, coordinator for residential academic services.

Rutledge said representatives from different departments and colleges within the university will be setting up booths to advertise their academic programs.

Colleges represented will be the College of Design, the College of Engineering, the College of Agriculture, the College of Family and Consumer Sciences, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the College of Education and the College of Business.

Earnest said every college has a different way of attracting students.

“Most colleges set up a display and bring literature about their college. It varies from college to college,” he said, adding that past Academic Expos have attracted about 100 students.

The event draws undecided students who are thinking of double majoring or students who have questions about career exploration or career opportunities, Earnest said.

A representative from Career Planning and Placement Services will be available to answer questions students might have about their career choice. According to Rutledge, information on time management, tutors and study abroad programs will also be available.

“The purpose of [the event] is to further connect the department of residence with the academic mission of the university,” Earnest said.
