Cyclone men and women back on track

The Cyclone men’s and women’s track and field teams return to the indoor oval for competition Saturday morning.

The ISU Open will be held in the Lied Recreation Center.

Assistant Track Coach Scott Roberts said, “This is going to be a much tougher meet than it has been in the past. We’ve got several of our Big 12 Conference schools that are going to be here this time.”

He said Division I schools such as Drake and UNI will be competing, as well as some strong junior college programs.

Because of the tough competition, Roberts said it is likely that “a lot of new meet records [will be] set, especially on the sprint and on the field events’ side.”

Kevin Bourke, ISU men’s assistant track coach, said the athletes from club teams are former Olympians, national champions and All-Americans. One of the clubs sending athletes is Nike.

Over 75 teams will be represented at the meet.

Bourke said although it would be great to set some records or qualify for the NCAA Meet, it will be good for the team to go out and “compete hard.”

“I think that we’re chomping at the bit to get to compete again,” he said.

Bourke said he expects the “dashes will be the toughest [events] in the meet.”

For the Cyclone women’s squad, Roberts said Oluwaseum Adetiba looks to have fast feet in the 55- and 200-meter events. At the ISU Holiday Classic in December, she set a school record.

Roberts also said to watch for Barbara Szlendavkova, Joanne Roepke, school record holder Leah Elbert, All-American Trina Radske and Kris Curnyn.

“We should perform pretty well. I think we’re going to see a lot of of personal bests,” he said.

On the men’s side, Quinn Harris and Randy Thompson are two All-Americans who will hotfoot the 55- and 200-meter dashes.

Bourke said he thinks three-time All-American hurdler Jason Woods “is running quite well” and faces good competition this weekend.

For the men who go the distance, Bourke said All-Americans Saul Lempirikany and David Lichoro will run the mile and the 3,000-meter.

“Obviously after cross country, we haven’t run that short of races since last track season,” Bourke said.

He said he hopes that Cyclone team is able to avoid injuries.

Field events begin at 9:30 a.m. with the weight throw. Cyclone legs start making laps at 10:30 a.m. with the women’s 5,000-meter run.
