Keeping a promise to children

Ken Moore made a promise.

He made a promise to the Children’s Museum in Lincoln, Neb., that when he moved to Ames, he would help create the Children’s Museum of Central Iowa, and Moore kept his promise.

Currently the Children’s Museum of Central Iowa is in developmental stages. Fund-raising to meet the $300,000 necessary to open the museum’s doors is the main focus, said Moore, who is a board member for the museum, said.

The museum will be hosting the last of three public awareness events at the Ames Public Library tomorrow from 1 to 4 p.m.

“These public awareness events offer hands-on activities associated with sciences and art to people of all ages. The museum is not only for children, but rather for the entire family,” said Saren Johnston, museum board member.

Unique and creative exhibits will be featured in tomorrow’s event, according to a museum press release. “Lime Slime” and magnet tables are two exhibits that should interest both children and adults.

The museum’s committee will also be present to answer questions about the children’s museum.

The public awareness events are also provided to increase awareness and encourage central Iowans to help this important educational process grow, according to the press release.

“The community of Ames would really benefit from an organization like the Children’s Museum of Central Iowa,” Johnston said.

According to the press release, the museum’s mission is to provide children with interactive learning through activities, and its greatest focus is the growing child.

Moore and fellow board member Paul Hudson, along with many volunteers, have been putting on monthly “road shows” until enough money is raised for the museum to be built.

Discovery Toys, Inc. will be at the Ames Public Library tomorrow to demonstrate developmentally appropriate toys, books and software.
