Women’s hockey team takes to the ice Sunday

The Cyclone women’s hockey team makes its first ice appearance at the Ames/ISU Ice Arena against St. Mary’s Sunday morning at 10:30 a.m.

Yes, 10:30 a.m.

The women puck chasers, who are in their second season of competition, have played only two games this season, both of which resulted in losses.

Still, the women are seeing improvements in their skills as well as the strength of the program.

Brenda Seggerman, hockey club president, said she thinks the team has potential, considering half of the women have been playing hockey for only one or two years.

Seggerman said the team may have been outskilled so far this season, but everyone puts forth “110 percent” and is improving.

Unfortunately, the Cyclone team only gets to practice once a week, usually at 8 a.m. on Sunday morning.

“Everyone who plays is really dedicated. To go to practice at 8 a.m on Sunday morning, that takes dedication,” she said.

Because the women’s club is newly established, they have limited finances. Ice time is limited and costly (running $70 – $96 per hour), so the team does not much time to practice.

Sunday evening, the women’s team is hosting a spaghetti dinner to help their funding situation. This is the second year the team has fundraised by selling noodle dinners.

The all-you-can-eat dinner is set for 5 p.m. at Collegiate Methodist Church. Tickets cost $4 in advance and $5 at the door.

Club Vice President Laura Deneke said last year, the spaghetti supper was well received by the community. This year, she hopes that it is even more successful.

People who have their tickets before the Sunday morning match can enter the rink at a discounted price — students are $2 and adults are $3.

“We’ve been working hard to get the money to get the budget together and get more ice time. It’s nice to see us working towards that goal,” Deneke said.

“We want to get a lot of exposure to our group and let the community know we’re here. That would just be great,” she said.
