Goldfinger and friends entertain sold-out People’s crowd

California ska maestros Goldfinger made its third Ames appearance at People’s Bar and Grill Monday night, captivating the sold out crowd with great music and bundles of energy.

The People’s crowd was also gifted with an added bonus — opening acts The Aquabats and Save Ferris.

The Aquabats opened the evening with a show that told a story. The band members were super heroes in red spandex jumpsuits, silver helmets and black masks, and made a grand entrance with smoke and a torch.

The music was typical ska, flavored with funny lyrics — many of which dealt with pirates and midget-pirates.

The power-horn driven music got the audience jumping and crowd surfing.

Following The Aquabats was the Orange Country, Calif. seven-piece Save Ferris.

The band’s cover of Dexy’s Midnight Runner’s “Come On Eileen” was the obvious crowd favorite, although tunes such as “Spam” and “Under 21” proved that Save Ferris’ true talents were beyond those of a cover band.

During the show, lead singer Monique Powell encouraged the audience to dance to the music and sing along.

“I love [Ames] so far. I got done everything I needed to in one block,” Powell joked after the show. “I got my comics, did my dry cleaning, and went to the copy place.”

Goldfinger followed Save Ferris and immediately had the crowd moving with a selection of fast-paced tracks from the band’s latest disc, “Hang-Ups.”

Goldfinger played a good mix of songs off of both “Hang-Ups” and the band’s self-titled debut during the middle portion of the show.

Lead singer John Feldman and drummer Dangerous Darren Pfeiffer added to the excitement of the show by flying into the mosh pit at one point.

Pfeiffer also jumped up on the speakers and danced around as part of a mocking of Chubawamba’s “Tubthumping.”

Goldfinger joked through several covers, including the intro of Korn’s “Blind,” which led into the radio hit “Here In Your Bedroom,” and a portion of an older Duran Duran tune.

“I love Ames — we rage here,” Goldfinger trombone player Garth Schultz said after the show. “It’s a great time.”

Pfeiffer also enjoyed playing at People’s again, although all he could say was, “Yeah, baby, yeah.”

The drummer said Goldfinger had a great time at the show, although People’s needs “better air conditioning and more beer, so we can pour it on the fans’ heads.”

Goldfinger has been on the road since August, and they expect to not be done until June or July next year.

Pfeiffer said the band is planning a European tour with Reel Big Fish and Smash Mouth in February

“I can’t wait. I think it will be great,” he said.

The Aquabats, Save Ferris and Goldfinger rocked People’s on Monday night, each putting on high energy shows and leading Ames through the Southern California ska revolution.
