The Iowa State volleyball team lost in five games to Missouri in Columbia on Wednesday. The loss drops the Cyclones’ record to 10-20 overall and 1-16 in the Big 12 Conference.

Missouri took the first and fourth games with scores of 15-10 and 15-7, while ISU claimed games two and three 15-7 and 15-12. The Tigers won game five 15-8 to win the match.

Four Cyclones recorded double- digit kills. Junior Colleen Henican led the way with 19, and fellow junior Virginia Hoss nailed 17. Senior Heidi Rogers and sophomore Andrea Thul both added 12 kills. Junior Julie McGrath set 62 assists.

Four Cyclones also recorded double-digit digs. Henican registered 18, Rogers scooped 13 and McGrath and Thul each contributed 10.

Hoss was a strong presence at the net with five blocks. Rogers blocked three.

Last weekend, ISU picked up its first conference volleyball win against Baylor. The Cyclones prevailed in four games 19-17, 11-15, 15-12 and 15-8. The team also lost to Texas Tech in four games 15-5, 15-3, 10-15 and 15-7.

Head coach Jackie Nunez called the Baylor match a “much needed, well-deserved win.”

“We played very well against Baylor,” Nunez said. “We were able to put together a consistent, solid performance.”

Henican said the Baylor match was the best volleyball ISU played this season.

She led the team in kills against both Baylor and Texas Tech. She also tallied 22 kills against Baylor and 23 against Texas Tech.

Hoss also had a good showing in both matches. She collected 18 kills against Baylor and 11 against Texas Tech.

Thul led the team in digs twice, recording 21 against Baylor and 14 against Texas Tech.

Henican continued to play good defense and collected 16 digs against Baylor and 12 against Texas Tech.

ISU’s Henican’s performance in Texas last weekend enabled her to be named Big 12 Volleyball Player of the Week.

Nunez said Henican’s recognition was “well deserved.”

“Colleen has had a strong, consistent year and has proven that she is one of the top hitters in the conference,” Nunez said.

Henican has reached the 20-kill mark nine times this season and has recorded 24 double-doubles this season.

Henican currently has 515 kills this season and ranks third on the Cyclone season kill chart.

“It’s a big honor to be named Big 12 player of the week,” Henican said.

Although she is pleased with the award, Henican said it takes the efforts of all players to achieve team success. “It takes everybody playing well to win,” she said.

ISU will wrap up conference play over break. The Cyclones will host Oklahoma Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in the Forker Building.

The team will then travel to Kansas to battle KU and Kansas State on Nov. 28 and 29.

“If we can come out and play like we did against Baylor, we can be in a good position to win all three,” Nunez said.
