Celebrating its 60th anniversary season, the Des Moines Symphony will host a special performance of Simon Estes joined by three soloists and a 200-voice choir.

The Des Moines Symphony, which has been a major part of the arts in the Des Moines area for the past 60 years, will celebrate its added programs, increasing members and overall improved quality.

“There are a lot of newcomers that have come to the orchestra, especially in the string section,” violinist Larysa Kozak said. “That has improved the general sound of the orchestra.”

With the combination of the guest performers and seasoned musicians, Estes will be joining Iowa State instructor Roger Cichy in the fanfare ” … and Make a Joyous Sound.”

Estes will also be performing Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 “Ode to Joy” and Dvorak’s “Te Deum.” Estes selected three artists to accompany him on these pieces: soprano Gina Poulos, mezzo-soprano Mary Phillips and tenor Chip Dorton.

“Beethoven’s Ninth is a really great piece. It will inspire a lot of people,” Kozak said.

A 200-voice choir composed of the Des Moines Choral Society, the Iowa State Singers and Chamber Singer and the Drake University Choir will also be an accompaniment to Symphony No. 9.

“It’s going to be an exciting concert,” Kozak said. “Maybe the best one of the year.”

The festivities will begin Saturday at 8 p.m. and continue Sunday at 3 p.m. Both performances will be in the Des Moines Civic Center.

Ticket Prices range from $12 to $32. Special student prices are available.

Tickets are available at the Civic Center Box Office and through TicketMaster.
