Cyclones soar above Jets to garner shut-out

The Iowa State Cyclone soccer team soared above the Kansas Newman Jets Wednesday afternoon in an 8-0 win.

Cyclone forward Jun Shen scored two goals in the first half and one in the second, earning herself a hat trick.

Forward Megheen Walker put two in the Jet goal for the Cyclones, and forward Jo Hinks and midfielder Dawn Weber also snagged one goal apiece. Midfielder Lindsey Rector dished out four assists.

ISU took control early, lighting up the drizzle-covered scoreboard at 7:44 when Krista Odenwald’s feet met up with the ball. Off an assist from Rector and Ann Davy, Odenwald scored the first goal of the game.

Although the Jets goalkeeper saved a dozen shots on goal, the Cyclones still knocked in five tallies by halftime.

In the second half, ISU kept the Jet goaltender on her toes by maintaining control of the ball on the offensive side of the field. The cardinal and gold continued their passing strategies and talk on the field.

The aggressive Cyclone tactics sent one Kansas Newman player to the bench.

ISU’s Patti Reed collided with Jet Jamie Huber in an effort to gain control of the ball.

Those same aggressive tactics put three more goals on the board for the Cyclone team in the second half.

Even though the score screamed nothing but ISU during both periods, the team continued to put forth effort until buzzer sounded.

The Cyclones tallied 34 shots on goal for the match.

Against the Jets, ISU used a one-touch play strategy throughout the game.

The Cyclones’ limited ball contact forced them to think about their play and to express their intentions before making passing moves.

The team frequently passed back to the sweeper, freshman Jessica Willey, giving her a chance to become comfortable in the position and her play.

Just as in last Friday’s shut-out against Western Illinois, the Cyclones played some of their reserves and continued to sharpen the game skills of all the players.

Klein said, “We saw a lot of different faces come to the forefront.”

Coach Cathy Klein said her team’s primary concern was not the final score.

“We’re not focused on results, we’re focused on preparing for the next game and the highest level,” she said.

Klein said she was pleased with goalies Hayley Mercer and Lauren Muser, describing them as “solid and anchored.”

She said the team is working to become faster, to make better decisions and to attack with more force.

Klein said she believes it is her job to prepare her players for upcoming games and competitions, and in order to prepare for that future, the team is working everyday to better itself.

Her ultimate goal is developing a nationally competitive squad despite a Big 12 Conference which is ultra-competitive, nationally prominent and has four nationally ranked teams, she said.

And naturally, Klein wants her team to reach that level of competition.

“We’re having a terrific year. Nonetheless, I never want to lose. My job is to prepare them for what’s coming tomorrow or next year. We always have to aspire for bigger and better things,” she said.

The Cyclones take on the Illinois State Redbirds this Saturday at 3 p.m. and Westmar University Sunday at 1 p.m.

The games will be held at the ISU Soccer Complex. Admission is free to all games.
