Volleyball remains winless in Big 12 play

For the second time in five days, the Iowa State volleyball team lost a five-game match at Hilton Coliseum.

The Cyclones hosted Missouri in conference play on Wednesday night and lost 3-2. The team struggled to maintain and sustain the level of play needed to beat Missouri, Coach Jackie Nunez said.

“We should not have lost to Missouri,” Nunez said. “We played well in game 4 and need to do that in games one through three and five to win.”

Iowa State came from behind to win game one, 18-16. In games two and three the Cyclones took and early lead only to falter, losing by scores of 15-11 and 15-12.

In game four the Cyclones cruised to a 15-3 victory. The lead in game five see-sawed between the Cyclones and the Tigers as neither team took more than a two point advantage over the other at any time.

Missouri finally outlasted ISU by claiming the game 15-13, and ultimately the match.

“Unforced errors at the end of game five made it difficult to win,” Nunez said.

Junior Colleen Henican, whose success continues to elevate as the season progresses, led the Cyclone offense with a career-high 29 kills. ISU hit 77 kills for the night and recorded a .238 hitting percentage.

Sophomore Andrea Thul followed with 18 kills and freshman Jennifer Collins added 10. Junior Virginia Hoss nailed nine kills in the match.

Freshman Sara Walters played as setter in the first two games and had 28 assists. Junior Julie McGrath set in the final three games and totaled 33 assists.

McGrath and Collins each served two aces.

Henican led all players in digs with 17, followed closely by freshman Kelly Cizek’s 15 digs. McGrath and Thul contributed 10 and eight digs, respectively.

Collins’ presence at the net was strong as she collected a career-high seven block assists.

Cizek agreed with Nunez that the team must play at the same high level throughout.

“We needed to sustain the level of play for game five,” she said. “We need to play like game four all through the match.”

The Tigers improved their record to 13-11 overall and to 2-7 in conference play.

The loss dropped the Cyclones’ record to 0-9 in the Big 12 and 9-13 overall. The Cyclones travel to Norman, Okla., to face the Sooners tonight.

The team remains on the road until Nov. 7, when they will try to set Colorado for a win at Hilton.
