The Iowa State volleyball team tucked three wins under its belt as it won the Creighton First Serve Tournament last weekend.

In addition to the title the team snagged, Cyclones Julie McGrath, Heidi Rogers, Jennifer Collins and Colleen Henican were named to the all-tournament team.

Henican, a junior, was named tournament MVP.

“It was our first tournament and going 3-0 gives us a lot of confidence going into our second tournament,” Hennican said.

Nunez was pleased with the team’s performance.

“We had high hopes and expectations, and we wanted to win this tournament,” Nunez said.

“I am proud of the team and its abilities.”

The Cyclones began play on Aug. 29 against Arkansas State and won in three games, with final scores of 15-5, 15-13 and 15-6.

Henican, an outside hitter, led all hitters with 13 kills. Rogers, a senior right-side hitter, recorded 10 kills. McGrath, a junior setter, tabbed 35 assists.

Defensively, Rogers, McGrath and sophomore Andrea Thul scooped up four digs apiece for the Cyclones.

Junior college transfer Virginia Hoss led the team in blocks with two solo blocks and one assisted block.

Next the Cyclones faced host Creighton on Aug. 30.

The two teams battled throughout the match, but ISU prevailed 11-15, 15-9, 15-8, 12-15 and 15-9.

Henican again led the team in kills with 24, while Thul added 12. Appearing in her first collegiate tournament as a freshman, Collins had 11 kills and five solo blocks. Rogers finished with 10 kills and 18 digs and McGrath posted 56 assists and 16 digs.

“Our attack is very diversified,” Hennican said. “Everybody out on the floor can hit and hit hard.”

In the final game of the tournament, ISU challenged Missouri-Kansas City and won 15-2, 6-15, 15-6 and 15-10. Henican led in kills with 18 and digs with 12.

Thul followed with 11 kills, while Hoss had 10. Collins again led the team in blocks with three solo blocks and six block assists.

“I was expecting to contribute a little bit in my first college tournament, but I was not expecting the exceptional play that I had,” Collins said.

Coach Nunez said she was pleased with the performances from the all-tournament players.

“Colleen is a dominating outside hitter and had a consistent performance all weekend,” Nunez said. “Julie is doing a great job running the offense and the team, Heidi is a vital component in her first year as a hitter, and Jen had impressive blocking and hitting numbers for the weekend.”

This weekend the Cyclones travel to New York City to compete with George Washington, Hofstra and Central Connecticut in the Hofstra Tournament.
