An educational workshop for families experiencing divorce will be held in Ames on June 20 and 21.

Lutheran Social Service-Beloit in Ames is holding its biannual Divorce Experience Workshop on the campus of Lutheran Social Services at 1323 Northwestern Ave.

The workshop is designed for children ages 5-18 and their parents who are experiencing any type of divorce situation.

The director of counseling services, Beth Dedic, said the program operates on a sliding fee basis. The other programs offered by the Lutheran services also except most insurances.

The activities include many forms of expression such as collages, role plays and stories. The group activities are designed for the appropriate ages and needs of the participants.

“It’s very beneficial and the clients always have had very positive things to say,” Dedic said.

Not only is the workshop for traditional divorced couples, but it is also for live-in situations which might seem like a divorce. Children who were never in an intact family who are having visitations with a parent are also encouraged to participate.

“We’re looking to have our next workshop in September or October; they are usually offered in spring and fall, but the April workshop was postponed due to weather,” Dedic said.

Lutheran Social Services now offers time-limited divorce counseling groups for children at its Ames and Boone offices. Other divorce- related services are also available, such as divorce resolution counseling, custody mediation counseling, custody studies and seminars.

Those interested in the workshop can contact Lutheran Social Services at 232-7262.
