Cyclones fare well despite weather

Despite cold weather, the Iowa State men’s and women’s track teams fared well at the Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark.

The Cyclone men captured four first place finishes while the Cyclone women grabbed six golds as well.

For the women, ISU thrower Kris Curnyn captured three field event titles, throwing 51-3 in the hammer, 153-4 in the discus and a personal best 47-8 1/2 in the shot put.

“I don’t know about the runners, but I used the meet to work on my technique more than my distance,” Curnyn said. “It was cold there. I heard it was colder than it was here. So I guess I did well under the conditions.”

ISU Head Track Coach Dick Lee was pleased with Curnyn’s performance.

“She had an excellent meet, winning three throwing competitions,” Lee said. “She did well, considering their weather conditions weren’t that good.”

Also for the women’s squad, sophomore Jane Groves took top honors in the 1,500-meter run, clocking in at 4-minutes, 38.50 seconds.

Groves later added a second place finish in the 800-meter run, registering 2:15.82.

“Groves had a very good day. The weather kept the meet from being as competitive as it could have been,” Lynn said.

Laurie Hammill placed first in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles marking a 1:04.14.

Cyclone freshman Leah Elbert tied for first place in the high jump with a jump of 5-4.

“They kept the meet outdoors and it limited how high they could jump,” said Lee.

Sara Riemersma also finished second in the 400-meters for the Cyclones with a time of 57.91.

“The coach didn’t want to be at this meet because of the weather. I guess you could call it a practice meet. But overall, we did well,” Curnyn said.

For the Cyclone men, throwers Josh Hagedorn, Jamie Beyer and TimWilson finished in first, second and third place in the shot put with throws of 57-8 1/2, 55-7 1/2 and 54-9 1/2, respectively.

It was again Beyer and Wilson in the discus at the one and two slots, registering throws of 173-7 and 170-0.

Cyclone junior Randy Thompson won both 100-meter dash and the 200-meter dash with times of 10:53 and 21.33.

Rounding out the scoring was sophomore Yago-Lamela Tobio in the triple jump with a leap of 50-5 1/2.

Andy Henrichsen also finished second in the pole vault with a vault of 15-0.

Both squads will send split squads to the Iowa Invitational in Iowa City and the Mt. Sac invitational in Walnut, Calif. on Saturday.

“We need some individuals to get some good times to get into some open races at Drake,” Lee said. “We’re looking for some continued improvement.”
