Cyclones take two from Panthers

The Iowa State baseball team traveled to Cedar Falls on Wednesday to complete the season series with the Panthers. The two teams were scheduled to complete a game previously suspended due to darkness, then finish up the series with a single game.

The Cyclones were able to come back and capture the victory in the rescheduled game, 6-5, and blast the Panthers in game two, 12-3. The victories improved the Cyclones record to 13-20 on the season.

Opening play in ISU’s half of the fifth inning with the score 3-2 in UNI’s favor, the Cyclones were held scoreless as the Panthers came to the plate in the sixth.

Northern Iowa led off the inning with a single and quickly advanced the runner to third. An RBI double plated the run for the Panthers as they took a two run lead on the Cyclones.

The Cyclones bats came to life in their half of the sixth inning as the offense erupted for three runs to take a 5-4 lead.

Senior catcher Guye Senjem started the scoring by belting a solo home run to get the offense in motion. Senior right fielder Clark Jones singled and promptly moved to second on designated hitter Matt McDonough’s sharp single. A two out double by junior second baseman Brian Bohannon scored both Jones and McDonough to give ISU the lead.

The Panthers came back in the top of the seventh as they were able to score a run as the Cyclone defense committed two costly errors. After a walk, consecutive errors by the Cyclones allowed the run to score and the Panthers to tie the game at 6 apiece.

The Cyclones wouldn’t be denied as they manufactured a run in the bottom of the seventh for the one run victory.

Senior center fielder Mike Bahun singled and advanced to second on senior left fielder Scott Vance’s sacrifice bunt. An RBI single by junior first baseman Shawn Leimbek scored Bahun for the ISU win.

Senjem led the Cyclones at the plate going 3-for-3 with a home run, two RBI and two runs scored. Bahun and Jones each went 2-for-3 with Bahun getting a home run.

Junior pitcher Steve Larkin recorded the win for the Cyclones coming in the pitch the seventh inning, evening his record at 3-3 on the year.

In game two, the Cyclones jumped out to an early lead and never looked back, scoring four runs in the top of the first en route to a 12-3 win.

Strong pitching from junior Nathan Teut kept the Panther bats at bay throughout.

Bahun led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second as freshman Aaron Runk was hit by a pitch. Leimbek walked and a Jones double scored Bahun, Runk and Leimbek as the UNI defense committed a costly error on the play.

The Panthers came back with a run of their own in their half of the second on a solo home run.

Both teams went scoreless in the second, but ISU plated three more runs in the third on four hits. Jones singled and scored on a Senjem home run. A single by Vance and a stolen base put him in scoring position, as freshman second baseman Jade O’Brien doubled to score Vance.

The Cyclone pitching continued to dominated, holding the panthers scoreless through fifth inning.

Scoring another run in the fourth, the Cyclones opened up a seven run lead. Bahun doubled, Runk singled, and Jones came through with a sacrifice fly to score Bahun.

Northern Iowa came back with two in the sixth to cut the ISU lead, but Cyclones were able to score two runs in the seventh on four hits and one UNI error. Singles by Leimbek and Jones started the inning.

An RBI double by junior third baseman Bill Uelmen scored Leimbek and Jones.

An RBI single by Bahun in the eighth scored freshman second baseman Jade O’Brien and Jones hit a Sacrifice fly to score Bahun and seal the victory.

Jones led the offensive attack for ISU going 3-for-3 with five RBI, a double and three runs scored. Bahun went 2-for-5 and scored three runs. Senjem went 2-for-4 with a home run, an RBI and a run scored.

Teut picked up the win for the Cyclones pitching 6.0 innings and striking out eight, giving up only five hits.

Teut improved his record to 2-3. Freshman Nate Hilton got the save pitching the final three innings.
