Spring Blood Drive brings in 1,900 pints of red stuff

Nearly 1,900 pints of blood were collected from 2,209 donors at the annual Spring Blood Drive March 24-28.

The blood drive, which was held in the Great Hall of the Memorial Union, collected blood and distributed it to blood centers in Omaha, Waterloo, Ames, Ottumwa, Cedar Rapids and Des Moines.

In addition to receiving more than 2,200 donors, the Blood Drive Committee had close to 50 volunteers each day, said Jen Fawcett, blood drive co-chairwoman.

The goal was more than 2,300 donors.

The busiest day for the blood drive was March 27, the last day greeks could donate in the name of their houses for Greek Week points.

“Friday was slow, but we did have more people from the residence halls and faculty members donate,” Fawcett said.

Laurie Denniston, a freshman in animal science, donated for the second time this spring.

“Donating took longer than I thought it would but overall it was a good experience,” she said. “It was my good deed for the day.”

Trophies were awarded to the sororities, fraternities and residence halls that donated the most blood. The team of Kappa Delta, Tau Kappa Epsilon and Delta Sigma Phi placed first in the fraternity/sorority race.

Pi Beta Phi, FarmHouse and Sigma Phi Epsilon finished second and Sigma Kappa, Phi Beta Chi, Adelante and Triangle placed third.

The residence hall house from each of the residence hall associations with the most donors will receive a prize of either a pizza party or a sub party. The figures from residence hall donations were not available as of press time Sunday.

Brent Davis, a sophomore in business, also donated blood for the second time during the blood drive.

“I gave because it’s for a good cause,” Davis said. “It didn’t hurt much and I had a nice doctor.”

Students who gave blood last week won’t be able to give blood again for more than eight weeks. The next blood drive at ISU will be held sometime in October.

“I thought the blood drive went very well,” Fawcett said. “We got compliments from both our adviser and the nurses. I was happy with the increased participation by the residence halls this year.”
