The Iowa State gymnastics team fell to the fifth ranked Nebraska Cornhuskers Saturday afternoon in Lincoln, 196.275 – 195.100.

Despite recording the second- highest team total in school history, along with several career and school bests, the Cyclones were outperformed by a solid Nebraska squad.

“It was a pretty interesting meet. We were disappointed but also happy to score that high on the road against a team like Nebraska. This score almost secures us a spot for NCAAs,” said Amy Pyle, head gymnastics coach.

Senior Kim Mazza and freshmen Kelli More, each competing in the all-around, recorded the two highest scores in Iowa State school history.

Mazza tallied a 39.325 to win the competition and once again break her own school record, while More scored a 39.275 to claim second place and record the second highest total in ISU history.

“To go to Nebraska and go one, two in the all-around is almost unheard of. Getting the school record is just icing on the cake. I’m really pleased for both of them, they did great,” Pyle said.

Starting out strong to open the competition, the Cyclones recorded a school record 48.825 with three scores over a 9.80 on the uneven bars.

Junior Michelle Hladky stepped up and performed a career high of 9.850 to lead the way for the Cyclones along with More’s 9.850 and Mazza’s 9.800.

On the vault, the Cyclones score was down from previous meets, but still managed to keep it close.

Freshman Kelly Cherwein led ISU by scoring a 9.825. Mazza contributed a 9.750 with More chipping in a 9.700.

“Vault wasn’t a good day for us, we had some problems. If we hit vault like we have before, the meet probably would have been tied,” Pyle said

Another school record fell as the Cyclones tallied a 49.275 for the highest mark in ISU history in the floor exercise.

The Cyclones recorded five scores over a 9.80, with two gymnasts recording career highs.

Junior Libby Bell and Mazza led the Cyclones, each receiving a 9.875. Junior Heidi Kirt scored a career-high 9.850 along with More who also scored 9.850.

Herzog contributed a 9.825 for Iowa State with Wall totaling a 9.775 to round out the scoring.

“We looked great on the floor. They were really having fun and having a good time out there,” Pyle said.

Mazza, performing a career high of 9.90, led the Iowa State charge on the balance beam as the team totaled a 48.40.

More also continued her steady performance by totaling 9.875. Junior Kayo Merritt contributed a 9.775 while junior Shannon Herzog scored 9.725 for the Cyclone effort.

The Cyclones next compete against the Missouri Tigers on Mar. 5 in Columbia, Mo. Competition begins at 7 p.m.

“We’re really looking forward to Missouri. We want to be clean and mean and build on our last performance. We still haven’t reached our potential yet, when we do the scores will be incredible. We need to work on sticking our landings and clean up our dismounts,” Pyle said
