Violinist back in business

After being out of commission for three weeks due to an unfortunate accident, violinist Anne Akiko Meyers will be back in business this Saturday night.

A month ago, Meyers was involved in an accident right before her scheduled performance with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra. Immediately after she played the concert she was rushed to the emergency room and, due to injuries, has been out of commission for three weeks.

“Des Moines will be her first concert after her accident,” said Paul Zastrow, Public Relations and Marketing Director for the Des Moines Symphony.

Meyer’s performances this weekend will be on Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Civic Center in Des Moines.

The performance on Saturday will be Meyer’s second appearance with the Des Moines Symphony. Her first collaboration with the symphony in 1994 drew responses from Des Moines Register critic John Karras such as, “Meyers played with thrilling intensity…she has a long and brilliant career ahead of her.”

For this weekend’s performances, Meyers will be playing Barber’s virtuoso violin concert, a piece that is included in her discography, as well as the Bruch Concerto No.1, Lalo’s “Symphonie Espagnole,” Bruch’s “Scottish Fantasy,” and the Mendelssohn Concerto.

As a solo violinist, this young artist has performed with the Boston Symphony, the Los Angeles, Moscow and New York philharmonics, the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Prague Orchestra and the Jerusalem Symphony.

Along with the performance of the Barber violin concerto, the Des Moines Symphony will present Adams’ “Short Ride on a Fast Machine” and Rachmaninoff’s “Symphonic Dances.”

“Concert Preludes” will take place before each of the performances in the East Lobby of the Civic Center. The discussions of the concert’s musical program will begin one hour prior to concert.

Tickets for the performances can be purchased at the Civic Center Box Office, or by calling Ticketmaster. Discounted student ticket prices are available.
