ISU tumbles over Iowa

The Iowa State gymnastics team rebounded from a tough Mar. 14 loss to Minnesota to defeat intrastate rival Iowa for the second time this season, 194.350-192.525, on Mar. 17.

The victory improved the Cyclones final regular season record to 8-6.

Despite scoring the third highest team total in school history, the Cyclones fell 194.850-194.725 to Minnesota in Minneapolis.

Senior Kim Mazza scored a 39.20, and freshman Kelli More recorded a 39.10 to once again lead the Cyclones in the all-around scoring with their continued solid performances.

More led the Iowa State cause on the uneven bars by recording a 9.775, with sophomore Michelle Hladky contributing a 9.750 for the Cyclone effort.

Moving on to the vault, junior Heidi Kirt once again led the Cyclones scoring a 9.850. Mazza and freshman Kelli Cherwein each vaulted a 9.750.

Mazza paced the Cyclones on the floor exercise by recording a 9.875, with More performing a solid 9.850. Junior Libby Bell also contributed a 9.825 for ISU on the floor.

Mazza, More and junior Shannon Herzog each recorded a 9.850 on the balance beam to lead ISU.

The Cyclone gymnasts then traveled to Iowa City for their final regular season meet against the Univ. of Iowa.

Iowa State dominated the Hawkeyes throughout with More leading the way en route to her first all-around title of the season (39.10).

The Cyclones opened the meet strong on the uneven bars with More and Hladky turning in solid 9.80 performances to tie for second place. Mazza contributed a 9.775 on the bars for ISU as well.

Once again showing their dominance on the vault, the Cyclones established a new school record of 49.10.

Junior Amy Wall tied the ISU vault record by performing a 9.950 and claimed first place honors for the meet.

Kirt vaulted a 9.85 and Cherwein contributed a 9.825 to help power the Cyclones to the new school record.

Bell took top honors for Iowa State on the floor exercise by totaling a 9.825, followed by More who tied for second with a 9.80 and Kirt who recorded a 9.750.

Junior Kayo Merritt recorded a 9.90 to tie the school record on the balance beam and capture first place honors for the meet. Herzog contributed a 9.725 for the Cyclones, while the team was plagued with three fall in the event.

The Cyclones now focus their efforts on the inaugural Big 12 Championship meet on Mar. 22 in Norman, Oklahoma.

The Cyclones finished second to Nebraska in last season’s final Big Eight meet.
