No dead ends on long strange trip

Even though Grateful Dead front man Jerry Garcia passed away a year and a half ago, the culture and ideals of the Dead are far from ever dying.

That is the inspiration behind the new television documentary “The Long Strange Trip Continues…”

Created by the Boston-based MarkeTVision Direct and the Burly Bear College Network, “Long Strange Trip” was made to educate deadheads and non-deadheads alike.

“Despite the passing of legendary member Jerry Garcia, the intense popularity of this group has not diminished in the least,” said the president of MarkeTVision Direct, Andrew Miller.

“The faithful came out in true form at “The Further Festival,” a recently concluded tour featuring the remaining members of The Grateful Dead.”

The half hour program, hosted by Mike “Zappy” Zapolin, takes viewers through the vault of the Dead located in Marin County, Calif., and includes never-seen-before interviews from band members and Dead archivist, Dick Latvala.

“To really understand the Grateful Dead phenomenon, you need to live it — and viewers will,” Zapolin said in a press release.

“This program is designed to entertain non-deadheads as well as their legions of fans,” Zapolin said. “It will engage even those who perhaps have wondered what the fuss is all about.”

Viewers will also be given the chance to join the Grateful Dead newsletter, the “Almanac,” and learn about new Dead paraphernalia, including Dick’s Picks, a CD of the band’s performance from Dec. 26, 1979, and the new video, “A Ticket to New Years,” that has an entire New Years performance with new video clips.

Also in the documentary are clips of friends and family of the Dead speaking of their Grateful Dead experiences, including basketball great Bill Watson.

“The Long Strange Trip Continues…” will be broadcast over the Burly Bear Network, which reaches more than 1.7 million college students and has over 132 affiliates.

Iowa State’s STV9, a Burly Bear affiliate, will continually broadcast “Long Strange Trip” this Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at 8 p.m.
