Glee club adapts to wide spectrum

The sound of men’s voices will resonate throughout the Music Hall this Sunday as the Iowa State Men’s Glee Club will have its third performance of the year.

Composed of 15 members, the group has been known to sing music from all over the spectrum. Sunday’s concert will include representations from several categories including a drinking song, a love song and a spiritual song.

Because of the wide variety of pieces the glee club sings, the group is composed of musicians who are known for being quite flexible.

“We adapt well to different styles of music,” club member Andy Calhoun said. “Our sound varies with different styles of pieces, but overall, we have a rich, full sound.”

“When I Fall In Love,” one of the pieces the group will perform, was specially arranged by club director John Kelly for the group.

According to Kelly, the piece, originally written by Victor Young, has been arranged many times with many alterations.

The original song was written for one solo voice and a piano but has since been enhanced for larger groups of singers and large ensembles.

“I made the piece more of an arrangement for men’s voices,” Kelly said. “I also added a coda at the end, but the tune is still the same.”

The ensemble also has been performed recently for many events both on and off campus.

The glee club has also been asked to sing the “Star Spangled Banner” before a few Iowa State women’s basketball games and is scheduled to sing in Des Moines and Cambridge.

Sunday’s show will be in the Music Hall Recital Hall at 3 p.m. Admission is free for all students.
