ISU swimmers sink Tigers

The Iowa State men’s swimming team defeated Missouri Saturday, while the Tigers proved to be too much for the women as they were handed a loss.

The men, 8-4 (1-3), beat the Tigers 143-94. The women, 5-7 (0-4), lost by the score of 174.5-67.5.

“I’m very pleased with the outcome. Missouri used to be not as intense, but now it is a hard place to swim,” said Trip Hedrick, men’s swimming team head coach.

Being at Missouri didn’t affect Lovrenco Franicevic, though, as he set a lifetime best time of 4-minutes, 35.64 seconds in his 500-meter freestyle victory. Franicevic also finished second in the 200 freestyle.

Hedrick said, “It was a great 500 for him, a lifetime best.”

Martin Anderson helped his team by earning first place in the 100-yard freestyle in 47.12, and the 200 freestyle in 1:42.12.

Bob Bredice won the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 21.39, while Joakim Dahl captured the 100 butterfly in 49.92.

Big 12 leader in the 100 breaststroke Jay Schlinder, also won his race with a time of 57.97.

ISU’s relay teams were also successful as the 200 medley relay team won with a time of 1:33.65. The 400 freestyle relay team won in 3:09.03.

Hedrick said, “It was a great team effort. Everyone scored and really raced hard.”

The women’s swimming team was lead by seniors Julie Bancroft and Christa Graper. Bancroft swam her fastest race of the year as she won the 100-yard butterfly in 58.84, while Graper took the freestyle in 54.25 seconds.

“We didn’t perform as well as we hoped to. We did some things really well and we have some things to sharpen,” said Ramsey Van Horn, women’s swimming team head coach.

The Cyclone swim teams will travel to Minnesota for the Minnesota Invitational next weekend, followed by the Big 12 Championship on Feb. 26 through March 1.
