Mayer to reflect on deeper aspects of life this weekend

Although Peter Mayer’s music has been compared to both folk and bluegrass, Mayer doesn’t think his songs can be completely sold out to either category.

“I would describe it as contemporary folk,” he said. “It leans somewhere between folk and pop.”

A Minneapolis-based singer and songwriter, Mayer makes his music with one guitar and one voice. He has traveled all over the Midwest, bringing his music to coffee houses, colleges and concert halls. Saturday, he will be bringing his one-man-band to the Mooncookie Cafe.

Known for his songwriting style, Mayer writes about issues that are faced by a wide audience such as materialism, consumerism and their spiritual implications.

He generally tries to stay away from lines that are clich‚ such as “you broke my heart” and “I’m driving down the road of life.”

“I try to reflect on the deeper aspects of life,” he said.

Mayer’s debut CD, Uncrowded Sky, was nominated by the Minnesota Music Academy as Best Folk Album of the Year, and it was recognized as one of the 1993 Minnesota Albums that stood out.

Music from Mayer’s newest CD, Straw House Down, has received extensive airplay on public radio, and he’s also been featured on KUNI’s “Live From Studio One.”

As for Saturday night’s show, Mayer is not yet sure of what his song list will include.

“I’ll just go with the flow,” he said. “I’ll be seized with the spirit of the evening.”

The concert will be held at the UU Fellowship of Ames, 1015 N. Hyland. The cafe will open at 7:30 p.m., and the show will start at 8 p.m. Tickets are $6 at the door. There will be no ticket pre-sales.
