ISU music professor to be on national TV

An Iowa State music professor will appear on a segment of “CBS Sunday Morning” this coming Sunday, Feb. 9.

Kirk Smith is also the director of orchestras at ISU. He was the guest conductor for the Black Music Repertory Ensemble’s 1996 national tour.

The Columbia College Chicago group specializes in performing works by black composers and promotes appreciation for the black musical heritage.

“The ‘CBS Sunday Morning’ people wanted to do a feature, so they video-taped a concert we did last year,” Smith said.

“The group is comprised of some of the best classical musicians in the country,” Smith said. Nine instrumentalists and three vocalists make up the group.

A CBS crew filmed the ensemble during a performance at Morehouse College in Atlanta last April when they were on a national tour.

Smith has conducted orchestras throughout the United States. Last weekend he conducted a high school orchestra in Billings, Mont. and this weekend he will be in Omaha for the All-City Orchestra Festival.

“It’s great to be able to represent Iowa State University across the country,” Smith said. “Because of these kinds of tours, ISU’s reputation is being brought to other areas of the country.”

“CBS Sunday Morning” will air from 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.
