Daily does bad

Aaron Woell

Those at the Daily perpetually state that if a reader has a question or comment to stand up and let his voice be heard; now, we have seen all the letters to the editor run the gamut from race relations to Stumpy the Squirrel and the question I want answered is: What is the purpose of the Iowa State Daily?

No doubt I will be told your mission is to inform and educate the readers about their surroundings and the community.

Unfortunately, the Daily has done a poor job of informing the readership. The proof to support this claim can be found in any issue.

Look for yourself and the only news you find, if it’s not local, is sensationalist trash like “Woman Falls to Death During Sex” and other such garbage.

Your coverage on politics, business, foreign affairs and domestic policy is so lacking I am sure I would learn more by reading MAD magazine!

Do you realize that your readership is a captive audience? This means that no matter what you print, it will be read. You should use the opportunity to inform students about the world as best you can.

The only reason I read the Daily is because I cannot subscribe to the Chicago Tribune out here and the only local paper, The Des Moines Register, is more of a joke than you are!

The GSB was right in their attempt to “censure” you as your paper has consistently demonstrated a lack of ability, typos and grammar being the most minor offenses. Many of your stories smack of yellow journalism, and I find fault with all these columns you allow the writers to have; why would I want to read a fictional account of some student’s life?

The article by Jessica Kearney on “Loser Bowling” was much more entertaining, and just as informative.

Do not treat the Daily as a job, because it isn’t! It is the opportunity of a lifetime to guide decisions and make a change in people’s futures. I warn you not to squander it.
