Madrigal dinner set for this weekend

It’s that time of year once again, for Iowa State’s Music and Dance Departments to combine forces for a performance of the annual madrigal dinner.

The event will take place in the Great Hall of the Memorial Union on the evenings of Jan. 17 and 18.

This weekend’s performance will be similar to the madrigals performed in the 16th and 17th centuries, as the themes of love, drinking and peasant life will dominate the storyline.

Although the basic story for Iowa State’s madrigal is the same every year, there are artistic liberties taken annually to spice things up.

“The music is different every year,” director Randy Compton said.

“And this year, the dancers will be involving the audience with their skits.”

The performers will be taken from campus groups such as the Iowa State Chamber singers and Orchesis II.

In addition to these groups, there will be various Iowa State music faculty participating in different parts of the production.

Chamber singer, Michelle Kudym said the performers are anticipating an exciting performance to reward their hard work.

“With the costumes and everything we’ve done to prepare, it’s going to be lots of fun,” she said.
