More construction in the works for Lincoln Way

One may be seeing more construction on Lincoln Way in the near future.

The City of Ames is concerned with the extensive traffic which travelers face between Duff Ave. and Grand Ave. Traffic Engineer Scott Logan said there is an extensive delay in that section of the city at peak periods, including the noon hour and late evening hours.

For the past six months, the City of Ames and the Iowa Department of Transportation have been collaborating with JBM/TranSystems (JBM) on improvement alternatives. Mark Kenneally, JBM consultant, proposed two alternatives for improvement. These alternatives include widening Lincoln Way from Oak Ave. through Duff Ave. along north side and extending Grand Ave. to South Fourth St.

Logan said these alternatives have not yet been selected by the city or state. “We’re still in the studying phase,” Logan said.

The improvements are expected to be a long-range project that will impact many businesses and residents. The city, the DOT and JBM have been meeting with businesses and property owners located near the prospective construction to discuss the alternatives. They are also asking for additional input from the public.

The first public meeting concerning the proposed construction was held in June.

There will be another public meeting Nov. 19 in the City Council Chambers to review the proposed alternatives before the formal presentation.

“We will take the public’s suggestions and views into consideration,” Logan said. “We get a lot of good input.”

Logan said a final decision concerning the type of construction Lincoln Way will undergo probably will not be made until January.
