The Iowa State men’s golf team continued their strong season with a second place finish at the D.A. Weirbring Invitational in Norman, Illinois that included 19 teams.

“It was a good tournament for us. We would have liked to have won, but then again, there are 17 other teams that would have liked to have been where we are,” said Dale Anderson, ISU men’s head golf coach.

The Cyclones, who shot a 54-hole 890, fell only nine strokes behind team champion Drake.

“We got out of the gate fast by shooting a 290, but we seemed to slip a little at the end. Had we done the things that I thought we would have done, then we would have blown everyone else away. But that wasn’t the case,” Anderson said. “We have a lot of talent on this team. I just think we need to want it a little bit more. I don’t think our expectations exceed our abilities.”

The Cyclones were led by Jason Knutzon’s 216, which finished him second place in the individual standings. Travis Korver tied for ninth place with a 222, Aaron Patton tied for 11th place with a 225, Donnie Teeter totaled a 227 to come in tied for 15th place and Jon Levy shot a 235 to tie for 48th place.

“Jason Knutzon is just playing magnificent golf. He really kept us in the running. He has finished in the top five of every tournament we’ve played in. He’s really doing a great job. Travis Korver is doing a good job, but he’s wishes he could do better,” Anderson said.

So what does ISU have to do beat high caliber teams like Drake?

“We’re going to practice with a lot more intensity. We have some great golfers. I know what we’re capable of. We’re going to have to turn it up a notch.”

The Cyclones will be in action again October 20-21 in Lubbock, Texas.
