Tomorrow at noon in Room 244 of the Memorial Union, there will be a panel discussion called, “The Term ‘Race’: Is It Appropriate?”

Speakers on the panel will be associate professors Derrick Rollins and Kathleen Hickok, and Gary Cornelius.

Rollins is the diversity adviser to Iowa State President Martin Jischke’s cabinet. Hickok is an associate professor of English. Cornelius is with the ISU Media Resource Center.

Rollins said the discussion will have main topics from each speaker, but the conversation could follow in any direction.

Hickok said her main points will concern how race cannot be logically defined.

“I am going to talk about the whole idea that [the term ‘race’] no longer has a scientific base. You cannot logically sort out who is in what race,” she said.

Hickok added that she hopes to also include multi-racial and bi-racial issues in the discussion. She wants to discuss the future and present of how these individuals are classified in society.

Rollins gave his opinion on the question: Is the term “race” appropriate?

“The question can be thought of in many different ways. In some settings yes and others no. We’ll discuss those settings and what the use of race means,” he said.
