The Swing Crew will make a beeline for People’s tonight

Forget a group of shaggy-haired musicians lumbering around on stage. Don’t even think about attitude or artists taking themselves way too seriously.

The Swing Crew tramples on those images of uptight, “we’re all that” bands and has only one thing on the brain: having fun.

The Crew has been around since before some of us were born — 1979, to be exact — and has evolved into quite a production. The band has a permanent gig at the Wisconsin Dells during the summertime and another already-on-the-calendar job in Keyston, Colo., during the winters. And they call this work?

Well, for the guys in the crew (Dennis Reifsteck, who sings and plays the string bass, fiddle and musical saw, and Mike Walters, who also sings and plays acoustic guitar), the beauty of the band’s existence is the tasty combo of job and pleasure.

The guys also have a knack at combining audience with the actual performers. They invite impromptu entertainers from the crowd to join them on stage to test the individuals’ performing abilities.

Some of the stuff from The Swing Crew’s bag of tricks include the Wisconsin knockers, the belly bongo, the hard hat solo, the washboard and competition singing. Important insider info: everyone who helps the band gets a free bumper sticker!

Despite the vacation-like gigs in Wisconsin and Colorado, The Swing Crew does take to the road in the off-season. Its touring takes the guys all over the country, especially the Midwest.

And in spite of the wacky attitude, high jinks and famous “toasting time” mortar shell, The Swing Crew has the talent to back up the antics. For instance, Reifsteck has a degree in music from the University of Wisconsin and is the musical director of the Wisconsin Opry.

Catch The Swing Crew (and maybe some of your friends) on stage at People’s Bar and Grill tonight. Start May off right. Showtime is 9:30 p.m., and the cost is $3. And don’t forget that ID.
