The Iowa State men’s and women’s track teams fared well this weekend, sending split-squads to Drake for the Jim Duncan Invitational and to Oklahoma for the John Jenkins Invitational.

For the ISU men at Drake, Yago Lamela-Tobio set two meet records by winning the long jump and triple jumps with leaps of 25-0 and 51-11 1/2.

Also for the men, the 4 x 100 team of Seymore Chaperon, Damon Lampley, Marc Elcock and Chris Wycoff finished in first place with a time of 45.39.

Lampley also won the high jump with a leap of 6-7 1/4.

“They competed well in Drake. Yago really had a great meet. Overall we were pleased with their performances,” ISU Head Track Coach Steve Lynn said.

The Iowa State split-squad in Oklahoma, made up of mostly throwers and sprinters, won five events with provisional qualifying performances.

Tim Wilson won the discus with throw of 182-7 while finishing second in the shot with a toss of 57-8.

The 4 x 100 team of Frank Nwankpa, Randy Thompson, Jason Woods and Jerry Harris came in ahead of the pack with a time of 39.92.

“When Frank got the hand off on the final leg, he was two meters behind. By the time he finished the race, he had a comfortable three meter lead,” said Lynn.

Nwankpa also won the 100 meters with a time of 10.36, while teammate Thompson won the 200 with a time of 20.78.

Woods also finished in third place in the 400 high hurdles with a time of 52.34.

The Cyclone women also fared well in Oklahoma with Kris Curnyn winning the hammer throw and the discus with throws of 163-5 and 158-6.

Heather Nelson captured the shot put title to complete the triple crown with a throw of 51-10.

Curnyn also finished third in the shot with a toss of 44-5. Gladys Nortey also helped out in the throwing events with a 157-7 second place finish in the hammer and a fourth place finish in the shot with a toss of 42-10.

“Our throwers did an excellent job down there [Oklahoma]. We were very pleased with their performances,” said ISU Head Women’s Track Coach Dick Lee.

Stacey Armstrong also helped the Cyclone cause with a fourth place finish in the 1500 and a sixth place finish in the 800 with times of 4:40.92 and 2:19.91.

The Cyclone women competed well in Drake, considering the 30 degree weather.

“It was survival of the fittest. It wasn’t a bad meet, it was just cold. For many of those girls, this was their first outdoor meet since that one day in Florida was rained out,” Lee said.

Despite frigid conditions, Trina Radske won the long jump with a leap 20-1.

“She [Radske] told me that she just couldn’t feel her legs,” Lee said.

Also for the women’s squad, Emily Flom won the discus with a throw of 140.

The 4 x 100 team of Andrea Graves, Jada Johnson, Laurie Hammill and Radske finished second with a time of 48.77.

Both Cyclone squads will be in action again, with the men competing at the Mt. SAC meet in Walnut, California and the women competing at the Quad Meet in Iowa City this Saturday.
