An Iowa State professor’s car was totaled in an early morning accident Friday.

Giles M. Fowler, 1031 Ridgewood, an associate professor of journalism and mass communication, was driving west on Sixth Street, when an east-bound Nissan pickup truck lost control and slid into Fowler’s 1994 Toyota Camry, ISU Department of Public Safety Lt. Lowell Huggins said.

“He hit a slick spot and came over into my lane and hit my car diagonally. He spun around and hit the rear of my car,” Fowler said.

The ice on the road was partially responsible, Huggins said.

“I hit a patch of ice, started fish-tailing. I couldn’t correct it and I hit his car, said the driver of the pickup, Brock Hutson, 16, of rural Ames.

No serious injuries were reported and damages were estimated at $8,000, Huggins said.

“I wasn’t hurt. My air bag was inflated and I was wearing my seat belt. I just walked out of a totaled car. I became a deep believer in air bags in about one-tenth of a second,” Fowler said.
